Kaduna

General information

Kaduna (City of Crocodiles) is a city with no clearly demarcated geographic boundaries. The urban part of the city largely lies in Kaduna North, Kaduna South and Chikun LGAs, and these are the LGAs where NURHI works.

Maternal Mortality Ratio

  • In 2008 (NDHS) maternal mortality ratio was 800/100,000 live births (about 1 death for every 12 pregnant women). Attendance of ANC was 30%; delivery by skilled attendants was 10%.

  • In 2003, the infant mortality rate (IMR) was 115 per 1,000 live births.

Infrastructure

Educational Institution

There are several educational institutions in Kaduna, including the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna, Kaduna State University, Federal Polytechnic Kaduna, Shehu Idris College of Health Technology; and hundreds of secondary and primary schools, both privately owned and public schools serve the educational needs of the city.

Referral Health Facilities

There are about 29 State Owned Secondary facilities, and Nigerian Army 44 Reference Hospital, owned by the Armed Forces. Some of the Secondary facilities in the project sites are Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital, Kawo General Hospital, Kawo (Kaduna North Local Government); Yusuf DanTsoho General Hopsital Tudun Wada; Gwamna Awam General Hospital Kakuri (Kaduna South Local Government); General Hospital Sabon Tasha Kaduna (Chikun Local Government).

Demographic Information

Total Population

According to the 2006 census, the population of Kaduna city was 1,139,578. The projected city population in 2025 by the UN is 2,360,000. The same source estimates the current rate of growth of population at 2.53% per annum. The city is a cultural melting pot, with several distinct groups. The Hausa/Fulani are the dominant groups in the city and the state, and the Hausa language serves as the lingua franca. The city predominantly consists of people who are Muslims, but close to 40 percent of the population are Christian (Maier, 2000).

Occupational Status of the Community

The majority of the working class people are self-employed (77 percent) with only 12.7% having regular employment; most inhabitants of the city work in light manufacturing outfits, service industries or in trading and other commercial activities. The working population is a mix of both skilled and unskilled workers, with large percentage of literate blue-collar workers.
